Dotted with big rocks, the soil is definitely roja (very red). You might expect the wines to be massive, but they are perfumed, dark, and complex, in the style of Screaming Eagle. In some years we make an “Oakville Hillside” wine from the rocky terraces that climb the Vaca mountain range—a darker fruited, spicier, chewier expression that bears more resemblance to Dalla Valle.
The 2019 Tierra Roja immediately shows the more classic red fruit profile that you expect from their intense, iron rich soils. This shows a very floral side to the aromatics with roses, rosemary, lavender and sage. The palate is firm but with sweet tannins and a bit of wet earth, cloves and cinnamon stick. Tierra Roja tends to be fairly forward in its youth but always surprises with just how long and well it can go in the cellar.
95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: A barrel sample, the deep garnet-purple colored 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Tierra Roja Vineyard comes bounding out of the glass with notions of ripe red plums, Morello cherries and blackcurrant pastilles with hints of pencil shavings, violets and camphor. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is jam-packed with juicy red and black fruits, supported by firm, grainy tannins and background freshness, finishing long and perfumed. (LPB)(3/2021) Barrel Sample: 93-95

Aromas of tile, dust, terra cotta and red fruit follow through to a full-bodied palate with clearly defined tannins that are layered and fresh. So drinkable and pretty. Drink or hold.

Coming from a steep hillside vineyard and red soils on the east side of Oakville, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Tierra Roja Vineyard delivers lots of red and black fruits as well as iron, new leather, dried flowers, and lead pencil aromas and flavors. Gorgeous on the palate, with full-bodied richness, a great mid-palate, supple tannins, and just a great mix of elegance and richness, this is classic 2019 all the way. Drink bottles any time over the coming 15-20 years. Best After 2022

Tierra Roja Vineyard is a four-acre vineyard located on the hillsides of eastern Oakville and is named for its distinct red soils. This 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is an incredibly terroir-driven expression, that wonderfully encapsulates the characteristics of the vineyard. It begins with a burst of red cherries and sweet red plums, which are accented by fresh-cut florals, spices, wet clay, graphite shavings, and hints of licorice that all take shape. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied and beautifully structured with gorgeous soft, round tannins that result in a seamless mouthfeel. This shows wonderful overall balance and finesse, with a precise, concentrated core that is laced with sweet red and dark plums that persist through the graceful finish. This is a beautiful wine from Tor that is extremely expressive at this early age but should also have a wonderful evolution ahead.

he 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Tierra Roja Vineyard is bright and energetic, all in a mid-weight style that is quite attractive. Lifted floral accents, orange peel, spice, crushed rocks and earthy tones add an attractive aromatic upper register. This is an especially gracious wine from Tierra Roja. The 2019 is very nicely done.
