In Aztec culture, the Eagle Warriors were a group of soldiers who were considered warriors of the Sun. According to legend, after Nanahuatzin flew into the sun to give it life, he emerged from his sacrifice as an eagle. The Aztecs believed that this connection between eagles and the sun made Eagle Warriors more powerful in battle. Although most of the Aztec military was made up of commoners, a soldier could earn a place among the noble society of Eagle Warriors through bravery and feats of strength on the battlefield. These warriors were known for their extraordinary combat skills and wore distinctive armor decorated with feathers and eagle heads with open beaks as headgear.
Upon joining the Eagle Warrior knighthood, members were awarded land, permitted to wear expensive jewelry, and allowed to consume alcohol.
